Here's a section from Xin-Yi Quan Text about stages of practice that occur over years of time in that system. 劲 Jin here is a different meaning then the way XPQ uses it:
{Understanding the 3 stages (jieduan) of Ming Jin, An Jin, and Hua Jin.
1 - Ming (Clear to see) Jin - The strength and form must be strong, precise, and clear. Extend outward with force. When putting out force it must pass through, penetrate, pierce, connect, be pliant, ferocious, round, firm, have a shaking cutting strength, and deliver explosive force. Practice and drill the hand techniques developing the external 5-Elements and the elbows to develop the internal 5-Elements. Advancing and retreating with bent legs as if wading through mud (tang ni) like "walking while plowing through mud". This is the stage of Ming JIn.
2- An (hidden) Jin - You must have already grasped and have a strong foundation in the Mingjin stage then you can start on the second stage. Now when using strength you contain it and don't reveal it on the outside. Store up (xu) but don't emit (fa). Deliberately store up your Jin. The power to 'fa' emit is held back but not released, to the opponent this feels very powerful and strange and then you can emit. This is called "Treading on thin Ice". This is the stage of Anjin.
3- Hua (transforming) Jin - This is considered the highest stage of practice. You must have already grasped the stages of Mingjin and Anjin and have a very strong foundation in them. You should have a lot of experience in fighting as you must know that this stage is 'Sheji Cong Ren' [same as in Taijiquan] Give up yourself and comply with the opponent. Use 'Zhan, Lian, Nian, and Sui' (sticky, link, adhering, and complying) [same as in Taijiquan]. Everywhere you need to be empty and not exerting strength. The whole body must be blending and smooth (hunyuan) and not starting and stopping. The skill of 'The opponent does not know me, I alone know the opponent.' At any time, place, or moment you can emit (fa) but only emitting force at the precise moment. This is the Hua Jing stage.}
Here's a text from Bajiquan's 3 types (zhong) of ways of issuing Jin:
{Bajiquan ways of using Jin: The exterior shape or appearance is divided into 3 types: Ming Jin, An Jin, and Hua Jin are 3 different ways of controlling 'Fajin' and making use of "Cross-shaped Jin", "Chen Zhui Jin" (Heavy sinking strength), and "Chan Si Jin" (Silk-reeling).
The Ming type of Jin puts great importance on hard strength. The martial power must be bold and powerful, heavy and stable, issuing (fa) as if it's a terrifying explosion. Practice in the Ming Jin stage requires speed but not too fast as every single movement must be trained with precision. It can't be sloppy. The upper, middle, and lower parts of the body must be coordinated and harmonized into a single unit. It's most important stance and stepping method is the 'horse stance'. The breathe and movement must also become harmonized in order to achieve a powerful 'Fa' (issuing) and not be 'soft'.
The An type of Jin is working the almost exact opposite to now strip away the power and hardness that was developed in the Ming Jin stage. One must now practice diligently and long hours to make the exterior soft and the inside hard. All the movements are now practiced very slowly, the internal strength must be even, well-distributed throughout the body. The movements must be linked or strung together without starting or stopping to develop a constant, continuous strength in the body. The foot work in this stage should be winding and rolling. One no longer needs to stamp the feet. The 3 parts of the body are still coordinated but one begins to feel how the parts can work with or against each other and not rely on pure muscular strength [but tendon and fascia strength.]
The Hua type of Jin's main feature is to not have any set footwork or be confined to any fixed pattern of movement or stepping. The body-method is extremely flexible and agile, trusting in one's own mind and reacting with a keen, sharp mind. Relaxed, freedom of movement, and smooth. The force/ strength is 'Full'. In practicing 'Fa' in the beginning it's done while casually walking at a slow pace. Later on slow can become fast. While practicing this walking around one must still make sure everything is coordinated. Qi must be sunk to the dantian. The inside supports the outside like a giant sphere. The inside and outside are united. The "Cross-shaped Jin" and "Chen [Zhui] Jin" (Heavy [sinking] strength) are used very quickly to take advantage of using the Straight and Curved to attack. This results in the capability of the attack to penetrate and damage the interior of the opponent (toujin). [It then goes on with some Bajiquan specific stuff...basically learning to take what was a huge bomb going off and focusing the blast into a single, focused point, like a shape charge.]}
